General Club Information 2010

The Red Stick R/C Club is a non-profit, AMA sanctioned club, organized for the purpose of securing and maintaining a flying field and facilities for the operation of radio controlled model aircraft. We currently lease acreage at the intersection of Burbank and Siegen Lane in South Baton Rouge where we have our flight facilities. Our Flying Club was formed in 1986. We maintain a membership of 90 to 130 and currently have no membership limit.

We have an annual slate of friendly competitive events and an annual Club picnic. Some of our members compete at the national level and have placed well in national class events. Club meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month (except for December when there is no meeting) at the Public Library on Jones Creek Road, at 7:00 PM. Meetings are open to visitors. Many meetings will feature a guest speaker, workshop, or program of general interest.

Many of the members are qualified and available to assist student pilots in learning to fly. New members who want assistance are introduced to members who can help out. Some of these members have special “Training Cords” which enable Futaba FM or compatible transmitters to be slaved to the instructor’s transmitter creating a dual control setup. This will let you learn faster with less risk of crashing. (Before buying any RC equipment, please check to see if the rig you think you want is compatible with the Futaba standard trainer port configuration. Several non-Futaba brands are compatible. All the local hobby shops offer equipment that is compatible if you request it.)

Although the flight line is open to members seven days a week, the best time for a new visitor to meet us at the field will be on Saturday or Sunday mornings when the weather is good. You can count on a good turnout on those days and plenty of help getting started.

In order to fly at our field (even while learning to fly), you must either, a) be a current member of the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics), or b) participate in our Introductory Pilot Program. AMA membership packets are available at the field, or through the AMA’s web site at http://www.modelaircraft.org. If you are trying to decide whether R/C flying is right for you, you may be eligible to participate in our Introductory Pilot Program. This special AMA sponsored Program permits you to learn to fly for up to 30 consecutive days prior to joining the AMA. Our Club maintains a list of Introductory Pilots and Instructor Pilots.

This is a fun hobby, and one that can provide you with a lifetime of enjoyment, challenge, and great friendships. Please feel free to speak with any of our members at the field, or you may contact our Membership Chairman, Ted Moran, at 225-978-0584, e-mail: [email protected]. You can also visit us at our web site at https://www.redstickrc.org
